Horse Riding

By prior arrangement Horse riding for the beginner or experienced rider can be offered at nearby livery stables by British Horse Society approved instructors. Holiday Livery is also available upon request.

Special Breaks are available for Horse riding participants.
 
Shooting clays and simulated game can be enjoyed on a real English estate in the Kesteven uplands where King Henry VIII came for his summer retreats.
National and International clay shooting competitions, including the British and English Open and the Subaru Sporting Championships, have been held here. Competitions are held regularly for the experienced clay shooter. For the novice; personal tuition by experienced licensed instructors is available by prior arrangement.
Special Breaks are available for participants of shooting activities.

Water activities
 

A wide variety of water activities including Fishing, Sailing, Windsurfing, Water-skiing, Jet Ski, Canoeing Wakeboarding, Swimming for the novice and the more experienced, are available by prior arrangement at Tallington Lakes, Rutland Water and Ferry Meadows, as well as swimming at Bourne Indoor Leisure Centre. Fishing is available at a number of local fishing lakes.

There are numerous golf courses in the area where tuition is available upon request. Prior booking for a round is normally required.

WalkingThe Countryside surrounding Maycroft Cottage lends itself to exploration on foot. From a leisurely stroll to a more strenuous hike, the area is criss-crossed with public footpaths. Town/village and woodland walks by qualified guides. There is something for everyone to see, history and architecture, flora and fauna, riverside trails,  picturesque villages and churches. In fact walks for everyone wishing to relax and enjoy this part of the country.
CyclingThe area surrounding Maycroft Cottage is idyllic cycling country, from the flatness of the fens to the gentle rolling hills, village trails and riverside meander. Cycle Hire is available or bring your own cycles and discover "hidden" picturesque hamlets and  villages at your own leisure and pace.
Bird watchingWhether you are an avid twitcher or a casual observer, the richness of the bird life in the area never ceases to amaze visitors. See buzzards, sparrow hawks, kestrels, barn, tawny and little owls on our doorstep. Relax in our secluded garden and watch wrens, robins, tits and numerous other visiting birds feeding and nesting. A short drive will take you to observe ospreys fishing on the lakes at Rutland water or red kites in their natural habitat at Fineshade, The Forestry Commission have installed CCTV where nesting red kites can be observed from the comfort of a building.
Book a few hours with our local naturalist Terry Barnatt and enjoy guided forest tours to identify birdsong and other wildlife sounds. Purchase Wildlife Sounds on CD, bird tables, bird boxes and bird food from Maycroft Cottage.
